RESUMO

Perovskite oxides exhibit bifunctional activity for both oxygen reduction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER), making them prime candidates for energy conversion in applications like fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Their intrinsic catalytic prowess, combined with low-cost, abundance, and diversity, positions them as compelling alternatives to noble metal and metal oxides catalysts. This review encapsulates the nuances of perovskite oxide structures and synthesis techniques, providing insight into pivotal active sites that underscore their bifunctional behavior. The focus centers on the breakthroughs surrounding lanthanum (La) and strontium (Sr)-based perovskite oxides, specifically their roles in zinc-air batteries (ZABs). An introduction to the mechanisms of ORR and OER is provided. Moreover, the light is shed on strategies and determinants central to optimizing the bifunctional performance of La and Sr-based perovskite oxides.

RESUMO

Operando optical microscopy enables imaging at the interface between the Zn electrode and the electrolyte of 1 M ZnSO4(aq) in the symmetrical Zn/Zn cells assembled as the pouch cells with the mechanical load of 0.8 MPa. The imaging was executed during cycling of Zn plating and stripping at the different current densities of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 mA cm-2, and the areal capacity of 2 mAh·cm-2. When the current densities are below 4.0 mA cm-2, no intense Zn dendrites are observed. However, at 4.0 mA cm-2, the severe Zn dendrites can penetrate through the separator and cause short-circuiting. From the electrochemical perspective, the voltage profile of such system drops to almost zero volt. Both operando optical and ex-situ synchrotron X-ray imaging further prove the appearance of the Zn dendrites. By Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, the cycled Zn electrode surface contains passivation species of Zn4(OH)6SO4, ZnO, and Zn(OH)2 that could limit the active surface area for the Zn plating/stripping, accelerating the localized current density and favoring the growth of Zn dendrites. With the SiO2 additive of 0.5% w/v in 1 M ZnSO4(aq), the severe Zn dendrites disappear, as well as the cycled Zn/electrolyte interface becomes close to the pristine state; low degree of the Zn electrode roughness and the Zn surface passivation is noticed. The appearance of the claimed Zn surface morphology was also confirmed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). In turn, too low or too high SiO2 content in the electrolyte does not generate desirable effects. A high level of Zn dendrites and short circuiting are still recognized. Hence, both the operando and ex-situ characterizations can mutually validate the phenomena at the Zn/electrolyte interface.

RESUMO

The well-designed network structure of synthetic polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles embedded on a nitrogen-doped graphene (N-rGO) surface was utilized as a cathode for aqueous zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors. Owing to the combination of the redox surface of PPy and the two-dimensional network structure of N-rGO, the PPy/N-rGO cathode affords rapid transport channels for Zn2+ ion adsorption/desorption and a faradaic reaction toward the synergistic composite materials. Subsequently, the constructed zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors with the optimized PPy/N-rGO cathode composites deliver the highest capacity of 145.32 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 and the maximum energy density of 232.50 W h kg-1 at a power density of 160 W kg-1. Besides this, excellent cycling stability of 85% retention after 10 000 charge-discharge cycles at 7.0 A g-1 was achieved. The high-rate capabilities with long life cycle performance of these novel zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors could find practical use in a wide range of applications, ranging from next-generation electronic devices to large-scale stationary energy storage.

RESUMO

Herein, the formation and electrochemical performance of a novel binder-free turbostratic stacked/ well-ordered stacked δ-MnO2-carbon fiber composite cathodes in deep eutectic solvent (DES) based zinc-ion battery (ZIB) is reported. Results of morphological, elemental, and structural analyses revealed directly grown and interconnected δ-MnO2 crumpled nanosheets on a carbon fiber substrate. Moreover, an improvement via a simple annealing strategy in the stacking, surface area and conductivity of the δ-MnO2 sheets was observed. Annealing induces the rearrangement of δ-MnO2 sheets resulting in the transformation from turbostratic stacking to a well-ordered stacking of [Formula: see text]-MnO2 sheets, as indicated by the selected area electron diffraction (SAED) hexagonal single crystal pattern. Besides, the formation of the well-ordered stacking of [Formula: see text]-MnO2 sheets exhibited improved electrochemical performance and cyclability, as cathode material for ZIB. The novel strategy described in this study is an essential step for the development of binder-free δ-MnO2-C fiber composite with a well-ordered stacking of δ-MnO2 sheets. This study also demonstrated comparable electrochemical performance between the turbostratic [Formula: see text]-MnO2 sheets and the well-ordered stacked δ-MnO2 sheets.

RESUMO

Manganese oxide (MnO2) is one of the most promising intercalation cathode materials for zinc ion batteries (ZIBs). Specifically, a layered type delta manganese dioxide (δ-MnO2) allows reversible insertion/extraction of Zn2+ ions and exhibits high storage capacity of Zn2+ ions. However, a poor conductivity of δ-MnO2, as well as other crystallographic forms, limits its potential applications. This study focuses on δ-MnO2 with nanoflower structure supported on graphite flake, namely MNG, for use as an intercalation host material of rechargeable aqueous ZIBs. Pristine δ-MnO2 nanoflowers and MNG were synthesized and examined using X-ray diffraction, electron spectroscopy, and electrochemical techniques. Also, performances of the batteries with the pristine δ-MnO2 nanoflowers and MNG cathodes were studied in CR2032 coin cells. MNG exhibits a fast insertion/extraction of Zn2+ ions with diffusion scheme and pseudocapacitive behavior. The battery using MNG cathode exhibited a high initial discharge capacity of 235 mAh/g at 200 mA/g specific current density compared to 130 mAh/g which is displayed by the pristine δ-MnO2 cathode at the same specific current density. MNG demonstrated superior electrical conductivity compared to the pristine δ-MnO2. The results obtained pave the way for improving the electrical conductivity of MnO2 by using graphite flake support. The graphite flake support significantly improved performances of ZIBs and made them attractive for use in a wide variety of energy applications.

RESUMO

A dye-sensitized solar cell is one of cost-competitive photovoltaic devices. For higher performance, all components have been actively studied and improved. However, Pt is still a dominant catalyst since first development although some catalytic materials were studied so far. Catalytic materials of counter electrode play an important role in the performance because it supplies electrons from counter electrode to electrolyte. Therefore, the catalytic activation of counter electrode is closely connected with the performance enhancement. In this work, Pt nano-fiber was fabricated by electrospinning and applied for the counter electrode. Its wide surface area is advantageous for good conductivity and catalytic activation. Morphological characteristics of nano-fibers were analyzed according to electrospinning conditions. Photovoltaic properties, cyclic voltammetry, impedance analysis verified the catalytic activation. Consequently, dye-sensitized solar cell with Pt nano-fiber electrospun at 5.0 kV of applied voltage had higher performance than conventional dye-sensitized solar cell with Pt thin film. This work is significant for related researches because all nano-fibers counter electrode material proposed so far never exceeded the performance of conventional Pt counter electrode.
